Privacy Policy

Last updated: 14 October 2026

This policy explains what information Notes with your friends ("we," "us") collects, why, and how it's used. Notes with your friends is a tool for adding timestamped notes to YouTube videos and sharing them with friends and groups. If anything here is unclear, you can reach us using the contact details at the bottom.

Information we collect

We collect only what's needed to run the app -- there are no ad trackers or analytics scripts of any kind.

  • Account information. Your email address, and a password if you sign up directly (we never see or store your password itself -- it's handled by our authentication provider, Supabase, using industry-standard hashing). If you sign in with Google instead, we receive your name and email from Google as part of that sign-in.
  • Display name. The name you choose (or that's suggested from your Google account), shown to friends, group members, and anyone you share a video with.
  • Content you create. The videos you add (we store a link to the YouTube video, not a copy of it), your timestamped notes, general notes, tags, and any discussion posts or replies.
  • Social information. Your friend connections, group memberships, and who you've shared a video with and at what access level.
  • Feedback. If you use the in-app feedback form, we store the message, your email, and the page you sent it from.

How we use this information

  • To provide the core features: your library, timestamped notes, sharing, friends, groups, and notifications.
  • To send you account-related emails: confirming your email address, password reset links, and magic sign-in links. We don't send marketing email.
  • To read and respond to feedback you choose to send us.

How we share information

We don't sell your information, and we don't share it with advertisers -- there's no advertising in Notes with your friends. Information is shared in these limited ways:

  • With other users, as you direct. If you share a video with a friend or group, the people you share it with can see the video, your timestamped notes, and your display name, according to the access level (view or collaborate) you choose. Your display name is visible to your friends and anyone you're in a group with.
  • Service providers. We use Supabase (database and authentication), an email delivery provider (for the account emails described above), and Netlify (web hosting) to run Notes with your friends. Each only has the access it needs to provide its service, and none are permitted to use your data for their own purposes.
  • If required by law. We'd disclose information if legally required to, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Notes with your friends or our users.

YouTube content

Videos are played directly from YouTube using their embedded player -- we don't host or copy video files. Watching an embedded video is subject to YouTube's and Google's own privacy practices, separately from ours.

Your choices

  • You can update your display name and email at any time in Settings.
  • You can mute notifications for an individual video from that video's menu.
  • You can permanently delete your account from Settings, which removes your videos, notes, and tags. This can't be undone.

Security

Access to your data is controlled by row-level security policies at the database level, not just checks in the app itself -- meaning the database enforces who can read or change a given piece of data, independent of the app's own UI. All traffic to Notes with your friends is encrypted (HTTPS). No method of storing or transmitting data is 100% secure, but we take reasonable, standard precautions to protect your information.

Children's privacy

Notes with your friends is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If we make a meaningful change to this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
